EMV Chip Card Frequently Asked Questions

EMV Chip Card FAQs

What is an EMV chip card?

EMV chip cards (EMV stands for Europay, Mastercard® and Visa®) are also referred to as “chip cards” or “smart cards”. They contain an embedded microchip containing encrypted information, making the card extremely difficult to counterfeit.

Is an EMV chip card more secure than magnetic stripe cards?

Yes. When used at chip-enabled readers, these cards encode each transaction with a unique identifier which changes with each transaction, providing stronger protection against fraud.

How do I receive a chip-enabled MNB MasterCard debit card?

We will automatically send you a chip-enabled debit card near your current card expiration date. If you would like a debit EMV card prior to your card expiring, please call 877-647-5050 to request a replacement debit EMV card for a $10.00 fee.

How do I use my EMV chip card?

  1. Insert the card, face up and chip end into the chip-enabled terminal.
  2. Leave the card in the terminal during the entire transaction.
  3. Follow the instructions on the screen and either sign your name or enter your PIN as needed.
  4. Be sure to remove your card and take your receipt when the transaction is complete.

Why do I need to leave my card in the terminal?

While your card is in the chip-enabled terminal, the embedded chip creates a unique transaction code. This prevents stolen data from being fraudulently used. If you remove your card too soon, your transaction will be cancelled.

What if a merchant doesn’t have a chip-enabled terminal?

For merchants without chip-enabled terminals, cardholders will swipe their card through the terminal.

Will my EMV debit card work at an ATM?

Yes, you can continue to use your card as you do today by following the instructions at an ATM.

Can I use Debit Card On/Off with my EMV debit card?

Yes, you can turn your EMV debit card off and on. Click here to learn more about Debit Card On/Off.

What if my EMV debit card is lost or stolen?
